Identity Theft Awareness Week runs January 26-30, 2026, and it’s the perfect time to make safeguarding your identity part of your everyday routine, just like brushing your teeth or taking out the trash.
Identity theft can happen to anyone, but a few simple habits can help keep you safe.
5 Smart Steps to Protect Your Identity
- Read credit card statements carefully and often. Look for unfamiliar charges and report them immediately.
- Know your payment due dates. If a bill doesn’t arrive when expected, investigate.
- Check your health insurance statements. Make sure all claims and charges are accurate.
- Shred documents with personal information. Don’t give thieves easy access.
- Review your credit reports annually. You’re entitled to one free report from each of the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian — at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Extra Protection Measures
- Freeze your credit if you’re not planning to open new accounts soon. This prevents anyone, including you, from opening new credit in your name until you lift the freeze. Learn more at ftc.gov/creditfreeze.
- Set up fraud alerts so lenders need to verify your identity before granting new credit.
- If your Social Security number or other sensitive data is exposed in a breach, a credit freeze is especially important.
