Overdraft Services

First United Bank & Trust is your financial partner and we strive to help customers responsibly manage their finances, including ways to avoid overdrafts. Below are some tips you may find helpful and want to explore further with us:

    • Use Online & Mobile Banking Digital Tools.
      It is essential to always check your available balance and any pending transactions before using your debit card or writing a check. Our digital banking tools provide quick access to manage or monitor your accounts anytime. Choose this convenient, secure and easy option to transfer money between accounts, set up alerts, and more!
    • Set up Card Controls & Alerts.
      Setting up low balance or transactional alerts through online banking is just one way you can help prevent overspending or fraud. Set a Threshold Amount on card transactions right from our mobile app, so you can have more control with managing and securing your money.
    • Review Overdraft Protection Options.
      Linking another account like a savings account1 or Personal Credit Line (PCL)2 with overdraft protection could be a less expensive option to cover unexpected overdrafts. The cost of a single, automated funds transfer, as opposed to multiple overdraft fees per transaction, can help reduce costs and give peace of mind.
    • Enroll in Direct Deposit.
      Use direct deposit for your paycheck to have access to your money immediately, reducing the risk of spending unavailable funds.
    • “Cushion” your checking account.
      Keep a cushion balance in your checking account, decide on a certain amount that will always be in there, and never dip into it. Please note that we do not charge customers if it is determined your account is overdrawn by a total amount less than $10.

 

Opt-Out of Overdraft Services

If overdrafts are a consistent problem for you, you can opt-out of any overdraft coverage. This opt-out means items presented against insufficient funds will be returned as applicable by law.

Any previous “opt-in” request to our Standard Overdraft Protection will be discontinued which may result in ATM or Point of Sale transactions being rejected or declined at the time of transaction.

Customers are responsible for the return items charges from First United Bank & Trust, as well as any charges from the merchant for return of the item. Most customers prefer to avoid these additional charges and embarrassments of declined payments, so this opt-out is intended as a last resort in special circumstances. This option may not result in a reduction of fees.
